There is no special Sierra Leone gold price. Gold mined in Kono or Tonkolili is worth exactly what the same fine weight of gold is worth in London, Dubai or Zurich: the international spot price, applied to the pure gold the lot contains, less the cost of getting it lawfully from Freetown to a refinery. This page explains how Multipro prices every lot, gives you a calculator, and explains why any offer far below this arithmetic is a scam rather than a bargain.
The formula
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Gross weight | The lot is weighed on a calibrated scale at intake and again by the PMT/GGDO. |
| 2. Fineness | The PMT/GGDO assay certifies the purity, for example 88.0 percent for typical dore, 91.6 percent for 22K, 99.9 percent for refined bars. |
| 3. Fine weight | Gross weight multiplied by fineness. A 1,000 g lot at 88 percent contains 880 g of fine gold. |
| 4. Spot value | Fine weight in troy ounces (grams divided by 31.1035) multiplied by the spot price on the agreed fixing. |
| 5. Export costs | Royalty on the PMT/GGDO valuation, PMT/GGDO fees, insurance, air freight, Multipro's fee. All itemised in the quotation. |
| 6. Landed cost | Spot value less costs, divided by fine ounces, gives the price per fine ounce delivered to your refinery. |
Gold value calculator
Enter the gross weight, the expected purity and today's spot price. The calculator shows the fine weight and its spot value before export costs. It is an estimate for planning; the PMT/GGDO assay sets the real figure.
Why dore sells below spot, and why that is not a discount
Artisanal dore is usually 80 to 92 percent gold. A seller quoting "USD 40,000 per kilo" for dore is not offering cheap gold; they are quoting the gross kilo, and the fine gold inside it is what you pay for. Genuine sellers and exporters therefore price on fine weight after assay. A seller who offers refined, 99.9 percent gold at 30, 40 or 50 percent below spot is offering gold that does not exist. No miner sells gold below its value when the PMT/GGDO in Freetown will buy it at spot.
What moves the landed cost
- Purity. Lower fineness means more weight to insure and fly per fine ounce.
- Lot size. Freight, insurance and handling fall per ounce on larger consignments.
- Destination. Dubai is the shortest, most frequent route from Freetown; Zurich and Hong Kong cost more per ounce.
- Fixing. The spot price on the agreed day. We fix at a time you choose, in writing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of gold in Sierra Leone today?
Gold in Sierra Leone is priced on the international spot price, which changes by the minute, applied to the fine weight certified by the PMT/GGDO assay. There is no separate, cheaper Sierra Leone price. Ask us for a quotation on a specific lot and we will fix it to the spot price on an agreed day.
Why is gold in Sierra Leone offered so cheaply?
It is not, by any genuine seller. Dore sells at a discount to spot only because it contains less than 100 percent gold and still has to be refined and exported. An offer at a large discount to the fine-weight spot value is the signature of a scam.
What is the price of gold per gram in Sierra Leone?
Spot price per troy ounce divided by 31.1035 gives the price per gram of fine gold. Multiply by the purity of the lot (for example 0.88 for 88 percent dore) to get the value per gram of that lot before costs.
What costs come off the spot price?
The export royalty (a percentage of the PMT/GGDO valuation set by the government), PMT/GGDO valuation fees, insurance, air freight and the exporter's fee. Multipro itemises every one in the quotation.
Does Multipro publish a live gold price?
No. We quote on specific lots at spot on an agreed fixing. For the live spot price, consult the LBMA or any bullion market data service.
