Buying gold in Sierra Leone is simple when it is done through a licensed exporter and dangerous when it is not. Multipro Business Facilitators is a gold and diamond exporter in Freetown working with NMA licence. We buy from licensed miners, have every lot assayed by the Precious Minerals Trading (PMT/GGDO), hold the lot in our vault under a receipt you can verify, and ship it sealed and insured to your refinery. This page explains where the gold comes from, what it costs, how the purchase works and what to avoid.

Where Sierra Leone's gold comes from

DistrictType of goldNotes
Kono (Koidu)Alluvial gold alongside diamondsLargest artisanal mining population; dore and nuggets
KenemaAlluvial gold and diamondsBaomahun and Nimikoro areas; active dealer market
TonkoliliAlluvial and hard-rock goldNorthern gold belt; small-scale licences
Bo and PujehunAlluvial goldSouthern river systems
Kailahun and MakeniArtisanal goldSeasonal, smaller lots

Most of it reaches the market as dore, unrefined gold of 80 to 92 percent fineness, and as bars melted by local smelters. All of it is consolidated in Freetown for PMT/GGDO valuation before export.

  6. PMT/GGDO assay. Independent weight and fineness; the price is settled on this certificate.
  7. Export and delivery. Permit, royalty, customs at Lungi, insured flight and a signed receipt at your vault. See gold export from Sierra Leone.

What it costs

Gold is priced on fine weight, the pure gold the lot contains after assay, at the international spot price on the agreed fixing. From that come the export royalty (a percentage of the PMT/GGDO valuation set by the government), PMT/GGDO valuation fees, insurance and freight, and Multipro's fee. The result is a landed cost per fine ounce you know before the lot is bought. Use the calculator on our Sierra Leone gold price page to see how gross weight and purity translate into value.

What to avoid

  • Sellers who refuse an independent PMT/GGDO assay.
  • Sellers whose licence cannot be checked with the National Minerals Agency.
  • Prices well below spot, "release fees", "storage fees" or "transfer taxes" demanded before you have seen the gold.
  • Receipts and certificates that cannot be verified with the company named on them.
  • Pressure to decide today. Real gold is still gold tomorrow.

Buying diamonds as well

We buy rough diamonds from licensed miners and dealers in Kono and Kenema. Parcels are valued and sealed by the PMT/GGDO, which issues the Kimberley Process certificate, and priced on that valuation. See diamonds from Sierra Leone.

Multipro Business Facilitators Limited is a private company. We are not Precious Minerals Trading (PMT/GGDO), the National Minerals Agency or any ministry of the Government of Sierra Leone, and we do not issue licences. We work with NMA licence and PMT/GGDO valuation on every export. Rules and fees change; confirm current requirements with the NMA before you act.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy gold in Sierra Leone?

Gold is mined in Kono, Kenema, Bo, Tonkolili, Kailahun and the Northern Province and traded through licensed dealers and exporters. Foreign buyers purchase through a licensed exporter in Freetown such as Multipro, which sources the lot, obtains the PMT/GGDO assay and exports it.

Is it legal for a foreigner to buy gold in Sierra Leone?

Yes, through a licensed dealer or exporter. The export itself must be valued by Precious Minerals Trading (PMT/GGDO) and permitted by the National Minerals Agency; a buyer cannot simply carry gold out of the country.

How much does gold cost in Sierra Leone?

The same as everywhere else: fine weight at the international spot price, less the royalty, PMT/GGDO fees, insurance, freight and the exporter's fee. Offers far below spot are the mark of a scam, not a bargain.

Can I buy gold in Sierra Leone without travelling?

Yes. Multipro sends the PMT/GGDO certificate and the safe-keeping receipt for verification, and ships to your refinery. Buyers who prefer to witness the assay are welcome in Freetown.

What is the minimum quantity?

Tell us the quantity you have in mind. We price on fine weight at spot and will say plainly whether a lot of that size is practical to source and export.

How do I pay?

On the terms set out in your contract, usually by bank transfer or letter of credit, with every cost itemised in the quotation. The gold leaves our vault only when the export file is complete.
