Sierra Leone produces some of the world's best-known rough diamonds, from the Kono District around Koidu, the Kenema District and the Tongo field, and the alluvial gravels of the Sewa and Moa rivers. Multipro Business Facilitators buys rough diamonds from licensed miners and dealers, has every parcel valued and sealed by the Precious Minerals Trading (PMT/GGDO), obtains the Kimberley Process certificate and exports to Antwerp and Dubai, insured and under one company's control.
Where the diamonds come from
| Area | Deposit | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| Kono (Koidu, Yengema) | Kimberlite and alluvial | Large, high-quality stones; biggest artisanal field |
| Kenema and Tongo | Kimberlite dykes and alluvial | Consistent gem-quality production |
| Bo, Pujehun, Bonthe | Alluvial (Sewa, Moa rivers) | Smaller gem and near-gem parcels |

Diamond scams to avoid
- "Rough diamonds, no Kimberley certificate, discreet shipping." There is no lawful version of this offer.
- Parcels graded only by the seller. The PMT/GGDO valuation is the price basis.
- Photographs of stones with a story about a dead relative, a bank vault or a security company. The stones in the picture are not the stones you would receive.
- Advance "export fees", "certificate fees" or "release fees" paid to anyone other than the exporter you have contracted with.
Gold as well as diamonds
Many buyers combine a diamond parcel with a gold consignment on the same flight. See buy gold in Sierra Leone and gold and diamond export.
Frequently asked questions
Can I buy diamonds in Sierra Leone?
Yes, through a licensed dealer or exporter. Rough diamonds must be valued and sealed by Precious Minerals Trading (PMT/GGDO) and leave the country with a Kimberley Process certificate. Multipro handles the purchase, valuation, certificate and export.
What is a Kimberley Process certificate?
The government-issued certificate that accompanies every lawful shipment of rough diamonds, confirming they are conflict-free. In Sierra Leone it is issued by the PMT/GGDO for the sealed parcel. Rough diamonds offered without one cannot be imported by any refinery or bourse.
How are rough diamonds priced?
By the PMT/GGDO valuation, which considers carat weight, colour, clarity and shape for each stone or parcel. Multipro prices on that valuation, not on the seller's own grading.
Where do Sierra Leone's diamonds come from?
Mainly the Kono District around Koidu, the Kenema District and the Tongo field, with alluvial deposits along the Sewa and Moa river systems in the south.
Do you buy polished diamonds?
Our trade is in rough diamonds from licensed miners and dealers. Polished stones are handled case by case.
